Puppy Proofing Your Home
Before bringing pup home, it is important to make sure that your home will be a safe place for it to live, learn and grow. They are very curious about the world around them and like to investigate so it's our duty to make sure that their environment is safe.
One way to do that is to walk through your house and think about anything that could harm your pup. For instance start clearing your floor i.e. books, games, shoes anything that could possible be ripped to shreds :) and this applies to all the rooms in your house.
Act like a dog and get a dog's eye view of your house...get down on your hands and knees and check things out like your bedspreads, rugs, tassles hanging off your curtains, tv remotes on low tables, cabinets and closets that your puppy may get into and with doing that, try to prevent as many emergencies as possible.
Remember that puppies like to chew so check out for things that might attract its attention. Keep in mind that whereas a human child will use its hands to explore and investigate, so a puppy uses it's mouth to explore.
Toys
If you have kids, make sure that you stash all their toys away as kiddies toys are very dangerous to puppies as they can chew a piece of and choke on it.
Electrical Wires
Electrical wires can shock dogs when they chew on them and have serious consequences so make sure to bind them up and put them away as best as you can. Keep an eye on your pup at the same time too!
Kitchen garbage
Kitchen garbage can have old rotting food, chicken or any other sharp bones and aluminium foil in, all of which can hurt a dog. Either putting the garbage in an inaccessible area or using a dustbin with a secure lid is recommended.
Bathroom garbage
Bathroom garbage such as medicines, cutex remover bottles and or dental floss can be swallowed in an instant so be sure to use waste baskets with secure lids
Poisons and household chemicals
Poisons and household chemicals can cause death so please see to it that none of these are accessible to your puppy, not at their level and in cabinets that are easily opened.
