Stages Of A Dog's Life
Stages of Life
Dogs like all animals and humans, go through different stages in their lives. They grow from tiny cells into fetuses, playful pups, face adulthood and then eventually senior dogs.
As a dog grows up so does his/her mind and body grow and change during the different stages of their lives.
Before a puppy is born the female/mommy carries her babies for roughly 9 weeks (63 days) until they are ready to face life in the outside world.
When they are born they are helpless. Their ears and eyes are closed, they have no teeth and they are completely dependent upon their mother for everything. Like human babies, they sleep a lot and nurse off their mothers so that they can gain weight, become strong and immune to diseases/viruses.
After 10 days, the puppies ears and eyes start to open. Now they start exploring everything around them…although still very much dependent upon their mothers! They also get their baby teeth when they are about a month old. When a puppy reaches 6 months their baby teeth fall out and are replaced by adult teeth. This is a process known as teething…that’s why you’ll find them chewing just about everything. Toys will be very helpful here!
Puppies also grow very very fast during the first year of their lives. Dogs are considered adults when they are one year old, but they may keep on growing until they are 2 or even 3 years old depending upon their breed.
Apart from ensuring your puppy gets the best nutrition available to him/her (ask your veterinarian about what the best feed is) they also need regular check ups, injections, vaccinations, deforming etc
Depending upon your dog breed, when they are one year old they are now regarded as adults.
Smaller breeds may reach adulthood at a year whereas larger breeds may take up to two years to reach adulthood.
That being said, a dogs physical age is not the same as their mental age. A healthy adult has a nice shiny coat, strong bones and muscles, good hearing, clear eyes and a healthy appetite! Keep a fresh bowl of water around for them at all times!!!!
Do not however forget that it doesn’t matter what stage of life they are at, they still need to go see the veterinarian at regular interval, go for top up vaccinations etc.
The first signs of aging in dogs are that of the white beard around their muzzle. Generally said, as they age the white will spread around their faces to even the rest of the fur on their body. Your dog will slow down and not play as much as he/she used to. They will rest more, gain a little more weight due to their inactivity.
During this stage of their lives, their food needs to be changed as well, to suit their lifestyle, age and needs.
A vet should also run tests on your dog to make sure there are no problems with his/her health.
